Junius Woods Stevens

1873-1947

Author of the Syracuse University Alma Mater

Junius Stevens was born April 27, 1873 in Camden New York. The early years of his life were spent in Syracuse, New York where he graduated from high school and entered Syracuse University in the class of 1895. In 1893, he wrote the "Syracuse University Song" which later became the Syracuse Alma Mater. He was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa.

In the fall of 1895, he joined the faculty of Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Penn. During his fourteen years at Wyoming, he wrote and organized the institution's first specific course in English.

In 1901, he left Kingston and joined the faculty of Barrenger High School in Newark, New Jersey. During the next few years he studied at Columbia University and received his M.A. degree in English. He later transferred to South Side High School as a Head Assistant in the English Department.

In 1921, he returned to Barranger where he later became the Head of the English Department. In 1939, he was made General Chairman of a committee to rewrite the English course for secondary schools in Newark. He retired in 1944 after forty-nine years of teaching.
